In the broadest sense, this study represents an exploration of current trends, issues and developments in contemporary French theatre, focusing on the areas of theory, dramaturgy and performance. Specifically, I have attempted a practical application of Patrice Pavis' model of concretization in an analysis of both the written and performance text of Michel Azama's Croisades .Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Pavis' model marks a significant shift in the field of theater studies in that it establishes a trend toward holistic, multilateral and globalized analysis; it includes discussions on how signs are constructed, received and manipulated in the process of signification and gives special attention to the question of fictionalization and ideologization of the text.
520 $a As for performance, this study looks at a production of Azama's play by Les Creations Diving Horse, a Quebecois theatre company in Montreal, Canada founded by Phoebe Greenberg whose work is particularly oriented toward an exploration of buffoonery as a means of achieving a distanced and universalized critique of the human condition.
