Thesis (Th.D.)--Boston University School of Theology, 2003.
In 1978, Tuomo Mannermaa presented a "new paradigm" of Luther interpretation in his In ipsa fide Christus adest, where he argued that theosis (divinization) is the central motif in Luther's theology. Since then a "Mannermaa school" of Luther studies has developed his theology in related theological areas such as ontology, ethics, and ecumenics. This dissertation critiques Mannermaa's paradigm through an analysis of Luther's commentary on I John, and demonstrates that the central motif in this commentary is not theosis but a theology of love.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In 1978, Tuomo Mannermaa presented a "new paradigm" of Luther interpretation in his In ipsa fide Christus adest, where he argued that theosis (divinization) is the central motif in Luther's theology. Since then a "Mannermaa school" of Luther studies has developed his theology in related theological areas such as ontology, ethics, and ecumenics. This dissertation critiques Mannermaa's paradigm through an analysis of Luther's commentary on I John, and demonstrates that the central motif in this commentary is not theosis but a theology of love.

Following the introduction and literature review of Mannermaa's argument (chapters 1--2), the dissertation analyses Luther's commentary on I John (chapters 3--7). The main body of the dissertation includes an examination of Luther's Christology and soteriology (chapter 3), Christian identity and ethical responsibility (chapter 4), the dialectical relationship of divine love and Christian love (chapter 5), Pneumatology and its soteriological significance (chapter 6), and the role of divine love in the theory and practice of Christian spirituality (chapter 7). The final chapter (8) provides a critique of Mannermaa's thesis based upon Luther's concept of love in his commentary on I John.

The dissertation demonstrates that the Mannermaa paradigm of theosis is not adequate to understand Luther's commentary on I John. The dissertation's emphasis upon Luther's theology of love and the renewal of Christian life also presents a "systematic theology" of a Johannine Luther that serves to supplement present Luther scholarship which focuses exclusively upon a theology of justification.

The dissertation provides a possibility of reinterpretation of Luther's theology as a theology of love that can be a more effective ground than Mannermaa's paradigm for an ecumenical dialogue among the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church.
