Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 1986.
This study examined the affect of an educational intervention (watching a denture-relevant or a denture-irrelevant video-tape) and individual difference variables (age, initial attitude, and initial subjective norm) upon patients' adjustment to complete dentures. In addition, the relationship between behavioral intent (the intention to perform an action) and patient adjustment (the target action) after viewing one of the two video-tapes was investigated. The convenience sample was of 50 dental patients being seen at either a Veteran's Administration Dental Clinic or at a University Dental School Prosthodontic Clinic. Using a repeated-measures pre-test, post-test design with random assignment to groups, all subjects answered the same series of questionnaires, in the same order, at the same point of experimental procedure. The questionnaires addressed behavioral intent and denture adjustment issues, with outcome measures being hours of daily denture wear, denture adjustment, and behavioral intent components. Six treatments by individual difference interactions were statistically significant.Subjects--Topical Terms:

There was an age by treatment interaction for both post-instruction attitude (AT2 and AT3), only the denture-irrelevant video group had a significant interaction with age such that the younger subjects had a more favorable attitude towards wearing dentures.

There was an initial subjective norm by treatment interaction for both post-instruction (SN2) and post-insertion subjective norm (SN3). For both SN2 and SN3 the denture-relevant video group had a significant interaction with initial subjective norm such that the subjects with more favorable initial subjective norms toward wearing dentures had more favorable subsequent perceptions of social support for wearing dentures (SN2 and SN3).

Finally, there was an initial attitude by treatment interaction such that the subjects with more favorable initial attitudes toward wearing dentures who viewed the denture-relevant video had more favorable subsequent perceptions of social support for wearing dentures (SN2 and SN3).
