This study describes the development and validation of a web-based test battery of ESL pragmalinguistic knowledge, operationalized as knowledge of implicatures, routines, and the speech acts apology, request, and refusal. Testing of implicatures and routines employed multiple choice items, while speech acts were tested with productive DCT items using rejoinders. 316 ESL and EFL learners in the US, Germany, and Japan and a comparison group of native speakers of American English completed the test over the web, with subgroups completing a multimethod version, an oral version, and a verbal protocol version.

Validation followed Messick's (1989) framework and included logical/judgmental analyses by domain experts, native speakers, and learners, correlational analyses (reliability, section correlations, factor analysis), comparisons between groups by proficiency, exposure, test method, and computer familiarity, analyses of test-taking processes by means of verbal protocols, and considerations of consequential validity.

Experts, native speakers and test takers agreed that the test was an adequate representation of the construct. The instrument was found to be internally consistent and native speaker raters achieved high interrater reliability on speech act items after minimal training. The test's internal structure mirrored the construct, and differences between groups were generally consistent with findings from previous studies. However, analyses comparing test takers with and without exposure to an English-speaking environment revealed a strong dependence of knowledge of implicature on proficiency, rather than exposure, as Bouton (1994, 1999) had claimed. Method effects and effects of computer familarity on scores were negligible and verbal protocols showed that the test engaged pragmalinguistic knowledge in test takers and native speakers. The test is seen as useful for inferences as to learners' pragmalinguistic knowledge, and for decisions that take developmental trajectories of such knowledge into account.

Future research should investigate ways of lowering the reading load of such an instrument by employing audio and video files, explore pedagogical uses of this test by including automatic feedback functions, and develop adaptive applications to increase measurement precision and efficiency.
