Social policies leading to the downsizing of psychiatric hospitals, and limited resources underscore the need for designing outpatient community treatment that is comprehensive and coordinated. This is a quantitative study of the mental health needs of seriously and persistently mentally ill outpatients in state operated mental health centers. The study gathered information from 133 mentally ill consumers about their treatment needs using the Camberwell Assessment of Need-Research Version and the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised. The results of this study corroborate empirical literature that indicates that the mentally ill are able to identify and clearly express their needs. Consumer's identified needs were consistent without distinction based on age, gender, ethnicity, and length of time since last hospitalization. There was significantly more need for formal and informal interventions when there were more expressed clinical symptoms. The results of this study can impact on the development of more meaningful outpatient mental health services.
