Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 2003.
This study examined family communication following the SIDS death of an infant family member. Narrative principles were used to guide theoretical exploration of this specific type of discourse. Research questions focused on narrative forms, roles, and uses. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. Fourteen SIDS families participated in in-depth interviews during qualitative data collection. Two hundred eighty-two parents and grandparents returned questionnaires for the quantitative phase. Single-sample chi-square analysis and binary logistic regression were used to analyze research questions informed by quantitative data. Results describe narrative topics occurring immediately following the death event and currently, narrative processes, narrator and audience roles, and specific narrative uses. The helpfulness of narrative functioning is explained in terms of underlying threats and the communicative management of these threats. Possible gender and generational differences are acknowledged throughout the discussion.Subjects--Topical Terms:
