This study investigated the effect of an alerting stimulus on the performance of sleepy drivers. A widely accepted theory of sleepiness (Carskadon & Dement, 1982a) suggests that an activating stimulus will improve the performance of sleepy individuals on behavioural tasks. (MM) is a compact self contained device that produces vibratory stimuli and, failing a response, an auditory alarm. Participants were monitored on the Shadow driving simulator under 3 conditions: not wearing the MM; wearing the MM while required to respond to a vibratory stimulus on average once a minute; wearing the MM which produced an auditory signal if the participant failed to respond to the vibratory stimulus. The effectiveness of the MM as a predictor of driving performance was compared to subjective (Stanford Sleepiness Scale and Modified Stanford Scale) and physiological (Alpha Attenuation Test) assessment measures of sleepiness. It was predicted driving performance would be best in the latter condition, that the MM would be the best predictor of driving performance, and that the MM would not interfere with driving performance. Fourteen males and 10 females (M = 23 years, SD = 5 years), who underwent one night of sleep loss, were tested from 3:00-6:00am. The MM did not improve performance on the driving simulator significantly, nor was the MM the best predictor of driving performance. However, the MM did not interfere with driving performance. The non significant results were probably due to a choice of less than optimal parameters for the MM. Further research is required to determine the best stimulus and response parameters to make the MM an effective counter to the effects of sleepiness, as well as a valid predictor of driving ability while sleepy.
