Factor analysis was used to evaluate the structure of 21 defensive reactions in a sample of 1484 (54.5% female) high school students (mean age = 15.9, SD = 1.2) from two suburban high schools. Students completed a new self-report questionnaire, the Response Evaluation Measure (REM), Rosenberg's self-esteem questionnaire (The Rosenberg), the Youth Self-Report (YSR), the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ), and a demographic questionnaire. Development of the REM is discussed. This development included clinical interviews and pilot studies to determine the defenses included and the items for assessing each defense. Informed by Monte Carlo simulations, two factors were retained using an unrotated factor solution. The theoretical coherence of each factor is discussed. As expected, the two factors were weakly correlated and factor structure did not differ by gender. However, also as expected, individual defense scores did show gender differences. Defense style, as revealed by the composite factor scores, had strong relationships to self-esteem, problem behaviors, and relationship satisfaction. The REM demonstrates acceptable validity and reliability. Implications for further study are discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
