The early American curriculum was classical, the mission to train students for the professions--law, theology, medicine--and the capstone course was moral philosophy. Over time this unity dissolved--moral philosophy became ethics and professional education expanded to include, among others, business.

Still attempting to provide the unity of old are 284 liberal arts colleges, of which 202 offer business programs. The catalogues of 186 were examined. By their mission statements, they intend to provide business education both within a liberal framework and imbued with a values dimension.

However, seven do not offer ethics, thirteen exclude ethics from their general education requirements--only twelve require it. Since the literature suggests values teaching is not a part of most classrooms, the conclusion must be that values teaching isn't something most undergraduates at liberal arts colleges with business programs are likely to receive.

Since 1959, interest in values teaching in business administration has grown considerably. The two courses which have emerged are business ethics and business & society, with one and/or the other offered in nearly half the colleges examined and required in twenty-five.

Examining introductory texts in accounting, finance, management, marketing, and policy reveals that business ethics and social responsibility are discussed in only management and marketing. Thus, values are not a major part of the business curriculum.

Business ethics texts overly concentrate on macro issues facing general management to the detriment of the firm's functional areas; they concentrate on manufacturing to the detriment of service firms. Thus, they do not reflect the reality of business today, presenting a misleading picture of where in the firm and in what types of firms ethical considerations are necessary.

Syllabi reveal requirements for much case analysis and writing. Philosophy instructors seem more willing to use cognate material, placing less reliance on texts than business instructors.

It is proposed that business programs be augmented by an introductory course stressing values in business, all functional courses should include values issues, and the capstone course, policy, should have a major values com-ponent.
