The study groups of Macaca fascicularis in Mauritius are similar to groups from other studies in composition, consisting of a core of central females a few large males and a sub-group of young adult males, which often forages apart from the main group. Group size is large with a mean of 67 and a maximum of over 90 animals, perhaps among the largest group sizes reported for non provisioned Macaca fascicularis. Birth rate was high, 83% of the North group females gave birth.

Macaca fasciculari in Mauritius did not appear to be food limited during this study. Births are seasonal coinciding with peaks in fleshy fruit production but no other measures of foraging or social behavior, such as day range or sub-group formation, were found to correlate with seasonal changes in fruit availability. The results are discussed in light of theories which explain the diversity in social structure and organization found among extant primates as a function of food supply.
