Fens are a unique but little understood feature of the ecology of the Sand Hills of Nebraska. Vascular plant cover and community composition of three sites was used to describe the zonation patterns present on Sand Hills fens. A TWINSPAN classification of 67 stands indicated ten community types. Five of the communities were classified as meadows dominated by various species of grasses (Poaceae) and sedges (Cyperaceae). The remaining five zones were classified and named by the dominant species present in the zones and included bulrush (Scirpus acutus), common reed (Phragmites australis), giant bur reed (Sparganium eurycarpum), cattail (Typha latifolia) and willow (Salix petiolaris). 520 $a Thirty sites were sampled for nine water chemistry parameters, water surface temperature, and soil structure in addition to the hydrology designation. Indirect gradient analysis using DCA indicated that hydrology, conductivity, alkalinity, Na, Ca, Mg, and Cl levels are all significantly correlated (r = $- $0 .635, 0.525, 0.410, 0.518, 0.569, 0.503 and 0.504 respectively for Axis 1 and r =.535 for hydrology for Axis 2) to the distribution of plant communities. Soil structure was found to vary between zone types. Direct gradient analysis was investigated using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and indicated that community types respond to differences in hydrology, alkalinity, K, Ca, PO $\ sb4 $ and Cl levels (for Axis 1, r = 0.961, $- $0 .391, $- $0 .616, and $- $0 .556 for hydrology, alkalinity, calcium, and chloride respectively and for Axis 2, r = 0.567, $- $0 .388, and 0.489 for potassium, calcium and phosphate respectively).
520 $a Three data layers were described for a geographic information systems (GIS) model to locate potential fens in the Nebraska Sand Hills. The model layers included the number 4 spectral band (near infrared reflectance) of the Landsat Thematic Mapper, the medium to high signature of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index calculated from channels 1 and 2 of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer and the soil designation established for organic soils in the Sand Hills. A test of the model in Grant and Arthur counties revealed numerous potential fen sites. Criteria were established for confirming fens and sixteen sites were investigated in the field. Nine of the Grant and Arthur county sites visited were designated as fens.
