Reproductive strategies are a major concern of primatologists. As part of this, adult male-infant interactions offer insight on the individual social strategies a male can employ over the course of his life history. For these issues macaques are particularly informative subjects. They inhabit a wide range of tropical to temperate environments, exhibit great diversity in aspects of social behavior, and are well-studied. The range of adult male-infant interactions within the genus Macaca spans a continuum from intensive caretaking to nonexistent. However, prior to this study, male-infant interactions in M. fascicularis were undocumented. From this study of a semifree-ranging troop of 80+ M. fascicularis living at Monkey Jungle, Florida, data on adult-male infant interactions in this species are presented and compared to the macaque model. A major adult male leadership change occurred during the study allowing several additional issues to be examined including inter-male relationships and the stability of overall adult male-infant relationships within the context of a social disruption, and what influence this disruption had on individual adult male-infant interactions.
