Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kansas, 1997.
Because of the existence of the intermediates, the circumscription between the two varieties of Polypodium pellucidum, var. pellucidum and var. vulcanicum, has been blurred. Recently, a taxon similar to P. pellucidum has been proposed as a new species, P. helleri. Thus, the taxonomic status of these three taxa is controversial. Although rbcL gene sequence data have supported a hypothesis that P. pellucidum may be a member of the P. vulgare complex, the interrelationship of this species with the various elements of the complex still remains unresolved.

This dissertation assessed the taxonomic status of the three taxa using data from various sources. Simultaneously, the relationship of P. pellucidum with the P. vulgare complex was evaluated using karyotype and crossability data. The morphological data indicated that P. pellucidum var. vulcanicum has longer basiscopic false veins than var. pellucidum. Polypodium helleri has wider blades and pinnae than the two varieties of P. pellucidum. Combining all quantitative characters, the three taxa can be separated. Isozyme analyses demonstrated that (1) the intervarietal genetic identity (0.785) is lower than the intravarietal ones (0.875 and 0.862 for var. vulcanicum and var. pellucidum respectively), and (2) the genetic identity (0.856) of P. helleri with P. pellucidum is comparable to that (0.869) of the two varieties. Analyses of spore germination showed that the two varieties of P. pellucidum have significantly different spore germination rates and spore viabilities. Karyotype analysis included six diploid congeneric species, P. australe, P. macaronesicum, P. scouleri, P. fuscopetiolatum, P. rhodopleuron, and P. plesiosorum. This study illustrated that P. pellucidum might be more closely related to P. australe and P. macaronesicum. The crossing experiments further indicated that P. pellucidum is likely to have a closer relationship with P. macaronesicum. Also based on the crossing data, P. pellucidum exhibited significantly higher intraspecific crossabilities than interspecific ones. After synthesizing all the data from the five resources, it is most likely that two varieties of P. pellucidum can be recognized. P. helleri may be a variety, P. pellucidum var. opacum. Regarding the relationship with the P. vulgare complex, P. pellucidum might be more closely related to P. macaronesicum.
