Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1989.
The intertroop movement and mating behavior of males during the mating season among the Japanese macaques of Yakushima Island (Macaca fuscata yakui) were studied. The results of the research showed that the presence of large numbers of non-troop males was a common feature of the mating seasons of Yaku monkeys. A small fraction of the non-troop males remained with one of the study troops but most of the non-troop males were visitors that disappeared from the study site by the end of the mating season. Many of these males succeeded in mating at the troops they contacted and non-troop males accounted for approximately 40% of the total observed matings. Much of the mating by non-troop males was during isolated consorts with females who left the perimeter of the troop in response to the displays of the males. No obvious correlation was found between the mating participation of the non-troop males and their tendency to join a troop. The life history stage of the males may have been more important in determining whether a male joined a troop.Subjects--Topical Terms:
