Thesis (M.A.)--Queen's University at Kingston (Canada), 2003.
One of the most fascinating figures of the Siglo de Oro in Latin America is Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. Indeed, her work was shaped fundamentally by the Novohispano Baroque context within which it developed, but in a sense too she was profoundly alien to this era: as a learned woman, she challenged the deeply patriarchal culture of seventeenth-century New Spain. Overcoming prevailing gender biases required outstanding courage and dedication. Sor Juana justifies her love of knowledge and argues for the right of all women to pursue learning. Through a close textual analysis of Sor Juana's poetry and theater, this thesis will analyse Sor Juana's reflections on love, a central preoccupation of her work and the Siglo de Oro.

The first chapter explores the two worlds of Sor Juana, the court and the convent. Sor Juana's poetry reveals the suffering of a woman who lives relatively isolated in a very difficult world. Her poetry is an introspective journey searching for truth and pondering the meaning of love. Chapter II presents this interior world by examining the very intimate and personal thought of Sor Juana's poetry. The two subsequent chapters deal with a much more public aspect of her work, her theater, where my purpose is to see how Sor Juana presents love in this framework. I conclude that her plays articulate a conception of love consistent with the ideas expressed in her poetry. Moreover, in her poetry as well as her drama, Sor Juana expresses her sympathy for the enduring struggle of women to affirm an identity autonomous of patriarchal power structures.
