The selected period, the years between the 60s and the 90s, conjoins crucial social and cultural changes in Venezuela, such as the collapse of leftist ideologies and the corruption of nominal democracies, the peak and subsequent downfall of economic wealth, and the growing impact of the media on society in general. These and other phenomena, negatively affect the social importance and function of Venezuelan intellectuals, and apparently leave no space for their work.

What I read in Venezuelan narrative production during the period considered is the devaluation, of literature, not only as a culturally valid model, but also, as a positive model of subjectivity. Such devaluation is clearly expressed in the negative national imaginary that the texts examined reproduce. The "crisis of identity" suffered by Venezuelan [literature, intellectuals, culture], which was already looming in national narratives since the beginning of the 70s, is presently evident in more concrete aspects of Venezuelan socio-political reality.

The project focuses mainly on narrative works by Renato Rodriguez, comparing them with others by more popular writers, such as Salvador Garmendia, Luis Britto Garcia, Adriano Gonzalez Leon and Francisco Massiani. My analysis is informed by theoretical debates on the representation of intellectuals within cultural productions and on the impact of marginality in social and cultural contexts. Among others, I have been Inspired by Cornelius Castoriadis' theories on human subjects and their relationship with society and culture, Angel Rama's vision of the "lettered city" and the role of intellectuals in its formation and development and Etienne Balibar's critical analysis of the national concept and its cultural and social implications.
