Thesis (Ph.D.)--Arizona State University, 2003.
Under the title "Paisajes masculinos: masculinidades homoeroticas en la narrativa argentina contemporanea" this dissertation explores the complex relationships among diverse, heterogeneous and ever changing masculinities in the works of five Argentine writers: Enrique Medina's Las tumbas (1972), Hector Lastra's La boca de la ballena (1973), Jose Mara Borghello's Plaza de los Lirios (1985), Oscar Hermes Villordo's La otra mejilla (1986) and Osvaldo Lamborghini's Tadeys (1994). Starting from a gender relational definition of masculinity, the present dissertation analyzes the representations of different masculinities (hegemonic, subordinate, complicit and marginalized) in the context of the changing political and social landscape in Argentina during much of the second half of the twentieth century. The theoretical framework of this dissertation stems from masculinity studies theorist R. W. Connell, feminist author Judith Butler, sexual historian Michel Foucault, queer analyst Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and the work of Latin Americanist David William Foster, among others.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation establishes the proposition of not a unique, monolithic and homogeneous masculinity but that of multiple, diverse, heterogeneous masculinities that are very much influenced by social, economic, class, ethnic and sexual factors, the increasing process of globalization and the fact that masculinities, as manifestations of a gender system, contain a certain degree of performativity in their representations.
