Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2001.
Using the documentary film Conjure Women as a foundation, this thesis explores the role of the humanities relative to racism and proves that the humanities are a vital tool in the African American woman's fight against racism. Conjure Women presents four African American female artists who through their art connect to their Africanisms and link their audiences to a deeper, more human view of what it means to be an African American woman. Citations in the areas of history, racism, sexism, and feminism support the artists' ideas regarding who they are as Africans in America and the need for the power of these ideas to move Americans beyond racism. The research results confirm that the ability to express the self through music, art, literature, history, and philosophy is essential to the survival of African American women because it serves as a lifeline to the true, fully human self.
