The first design is a high light efficiency confocal optical microscope, which substantially solved the low light efficiency problem in previous designs of the confocal optical microscope with Nipkow disk scanning. The new design uses a secondary disk mounted on the same shaft as the Nipkow disk and two disks rotate together. On the secondary disk, there are thousands of Fresnel zone plates serving as focusing elements to focus light passing through the pinholes on the Nipkow disk. Therefore, the light efficiency can be greatly increased and the signal to background noise ratio can also be improved.

The second design is the direct-view confocal stereo microscope, which is aimed to provide people with real-time three dimensional images at high power. In this design, we use synchronized object and image planes scanning, by presenting the images to two eyes with slight disparity to create the three-dimensional sensation. The related psychological and physiological effects about the three-dimensional viewing are also presented.
