The purpose of this study was to determine baseline range of motion (ROM) measurements of well elderly individuals at the cervical and shoulder joints. One hundred well elderly individuals who were between the ages of 60-90 years and who resided in the community were subjects. Active and passive range of motion were measured at each subject's cervical joint in the motions of rotation, forward flexion, lateral flexion, extension, and shoulder horizontal extension and horizontal flexion by using a universal goniometer. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data with regard to age, gender, and hand dominance. The scores were then compared to the standard norms established by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) (1965) to determine if differences exist. The results of this study revealed the ROM measurements of the subjects were significantly lower than those of the AAOS, indicating that the current norms being used are inappropriate for and not representative of the subjects used in this study.
