Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 2004.
This dissertation introduces a theoretical and pragmatic model for the treatment and prevention of eating disorders. The two component model includes a knowledge-based sexuality curriculum designed to encourage open discussion of issues of sexuality and dance/movement therapy which provides a safe environment for processing sensitive issues of sexuality through the use of a bodily discourse. Each of these issues is addressed through the cultural context of the women participants lived experiences. The positionality of the group facilitators is also addressed as a key factor of the model.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter one provides a historical perspective of eating disorders and their treatment and identifies the patriarchal themes that have been consistent throughout the history of eating disorders. Chapter two discusses the political nature of eating disorders with an emphasis on the deconstruction of femininity and how women have responded to this social construction through a bodily discourse as well as through a discourse of eating. Chapter three creates a theoretical base for the development of the treatment/prevention model centering on the discourse of desire and the use of dance/movement therapy as a medium for expressing issues of sexuality. Finally, Chapter four describes in detail the actual prevention/treatment model including the target population, program length, program rationale, curriculum design and possible methods for evaluating the program effectiveness. Each chapter includes personal reflections to ensure a connection between the theoretical and the lived experience.
