In this study I examine the liberating potential of the Minjung, or the marginalized, in Kut, or Corean Shamanist rituals, as I critically analyze two films, Pimak [Mortuary] and Taebaeksanmaek [Taebaek Mountains], and one television drama Mudang [Shaman]. Interviewing Kut participants and documenting their performances, I develop Minjung perspectives as a framework through which to analyze how filmmakers portray the cultural production of Kut.Subjects--Topical Terms:

I use ethnographic and historical analysis to explore how the marginalized in Corea have liberated themselves from socio-political oppressions during socially and politically difficult eras, and how Kut has functioned in their liberation. I examine cultural meanings in representations of Mudang and Kut, considering elements of Kut---such as dance movements, songs, predictions, and stories---as cultural manifestations. My standard for liberating potential proceeds from a critical frame based in the Minjung perspective that has evolved in part from a reflexive analysis of my own experience.

In media representations, I find evidence for stereotyped images of a "bad woman" who disobeys social customs, a bearer of social stigma and, at the same time, a socially feared power whereas in live performances, there are female Mudang who empower themselves presenting positive images of women who advocate for social change. I also argue that engaging bodies in live performance as a collective ritual enactment carries liberating potential more directly and powerfully than mass media productions. This happens because audiences have more direct, interactive experiences in live performances whereas in films, their experiences are indirect and passive.

This study has important implications for dance scholars, since it explores socio-political aspects of dance through analysis of the relations between mass media productions and live performances. Live performances of ritual dances can establish a critical framework for the analysis of representations in the media. As an example of Minjung historiography, this study also suggests some of the practical applications of art available to oppressed groups in Corean society. The significance of liberating potential is highlighted as a critical affirmation for oppressed people, since sometimes they themselves are oblivious to their own power to liberate.
