Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2004.
This dissertation examines the work and philosophy of Oskar Schlemmer and total dance theater, in an effort to articulate and re-evaluate his conception of the transformation of the human form. His principal investigation and achievement ranges from the exploration of the relationship between dancer and space, to the transformation of the human form, to his elevating the theatrical elements of his choreography to a prominence equal to the dance itself.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Schlemmer's contribution as a choreographer has received limited recognition and has mostly been related to the Socialist or Constructivist movement of his time. This dissertation presents evidence that his choreography was perceived as mechanistic and dehumanizing, a view that unchallenged for decades. The Nazi regime prevented access to his works by condemning them as "Entartete Kunst" in 1937. The dissertation shows that Schlemmer sought to explore throughout his artistic career the importance of the human being in every aspect of art. More specifically, his effort was to develop a concept of "Man in Space," a definition of the organic and spiritual relationship between man and his surrounding space.

An analysis is provided of the formation of his philosophy emerging from a synthesis of the Industrial Revolution, World War I, and the general milieu of artistic revolution of that era. His work at the Bauhaus is investigated, particularly his position as a mediator throughout the continuous struggle for survival of the school and conflicts among faculty members. His choreography is also analyzed to examine how his concept of "man in space" came to life on stage.

This dissertation provides a critique of Oskar Schlemmer's philosophy and art in an effort to uncover a new portrait of his work and address some of the negative criticism of it that was, as the dissertation argues, unjustified.
