Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2003.
This study was an exploratory study of the concept of touch acceptability in casual relationships among 223 college students (140 women and 83 men). The Touch Questionnaire (TQ), a 160 question survey designed to measure where and when participants believe it is okay or not okay to touch others or to be touched by others on various body parts was the instrument employed. Clustering allowed more meaningful understanding of the data. The three-cluster solution that emerged was consistent with existing understanding regarding touch. Three, significantly different touch zones, each representing a different measure of touch acceptability, were identified: Public, mostly always okay to touch, private, mostly never okay to touch and discretionary, sometimes okay and sometimes not okay to touch. Touch direction, gender and race/ethnicity were found to interact with touch acceptability in each of the touch zones.Subjects--Topical Terms:
