The late Tenor Saxophonist Joe Henderson had been a widely respected and influential presence on the jazz scene from his first recording as a leader in 1963 until his passing in 2001. His approach is evident in the improvisational language of modern players like Joe Lovano and Branford Marsalis yet there is an overall dearth of scholarship that focuses on him.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The period in Henderson's recording career with Blue Note records from 1963--1966 is known as one of his most dynamic compositionally and improvisationally. This focus of the study is a detailed theoretical analysis of three of his original compositions from that period: "Recordame", "Inner Urge" and "Granted". As a preface to the analysis, a survey of musical contributions of artists that influenced Joe Henderson and an comprehensive overview of Henderson's life and career are presented.

Within the analysis itself, the compositions and corresponding solos by Henderson are examined with respect to significant melodic, harmonic and rhythmic events taking into account parameters like motivic and rhythmic development and phrase. A linear analysis of each composition and improvisation reveals important melodic/structural details through a process adapted from the methodology of Salzer.
