Thesis (M.A.)--University of Southern California, 2003.
The public's fear of sex offenders, and their potential to strike again, has prompted legislation (like Megan's Law) that keeps the public aware of their whereabouts. Still, skepticism remains over the effectiveness of sex offender treatment programs. This documentary profiles three practicing therapists who provide sex offender treatment. Most stories in the media have focused on law enforcement, the victims of sex crimes or even the offenders themselves. Fewer stories focus on the challenges and contributions of mental health professionals working with these offenders. Counseling sessions are confrontational, clients are often resistant, and public sentiment leans toward isolating—rather than treating—the offenders. Still, the therapists conclude that rehabilitation serves the need for public safety as much as it benefits their clients.Subjects--Topical Terms:
