This study chronicles the life of Elmer W. Lower, former president of ABC News and television news pioneer. Informed by Giddens's structuration theory and Bugeja's taxonomy of influences on journalistic decision-making, the study identifies life influences that formed Lower's conception of journalism and prepared him to participate in the early development of network television news. The study identifies Lower's contributions to television news, as well as those factors that constrained him from exerting further influence. Implications of using structuration theory for biography are explored.Subjects--Topical Terms:
