The purpose of this research was to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of an alternative method of educating adolescents with learning disabilities. The question posed was what effect did the integration of trade books into a cross-curricular approach to learning have upon the learning disabled adolescent? While the processes of reading were highlighted, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking were also studied as students strived to create meaning and build historical understanding during reading, language arts, and social studies classes.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Data were analyzed from a purposive sample of three learning disabled adolescents with reading and writing skills within the fourth-grade level. Five stances were used to measure both levels of engagement and the meaning-making process during the reading of trade books. The stances were applied to students' literature response journals and interview responses. Journal excerpts and interview responses were then categorized within the stances. Interraters checked the reliability of the placement process. Triangulation of interviews, journal entries, field notes, audio-taping, and class projects was used to strengthen the validity of the research.

The results of the investigation revealed that being immersed in an historical period across subject areas facilitated the development of historical understanding. Actively involved and challenged, subjects moved recursively through the five stances as they created meaning in their own idiosyncratic manner based upon the trade books they read, class discussions, and content area lectures.
