This research utilized Kouzes and Posner's (1995) Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). It also included the development of a teamwork attitudes measurement instrument. Based on a review of the literature, survey items were developed to measure the extent to which CFO agree with the beliefs and benefits of using teams and the barriers associated of implementing teams. Similarly, survey items were developed to measure the dependent variable, the promotion of teamwork. The LPI and the teamwork attitude measures were combined to form the survey instrument used to measure the characteristics of a CFO most likely to promote teamwork.

The survey requested responses from a geographically stratified random sample of 300 community college CFOs across the United States. Based on 138 complete responses, the findings reveal that the extent to which a CFO reports behaviors associated with inspiring a shared vision (Kouzes & Posner, 1995) and agreement with the beliefs and benefits associated with teamwork accounted for more than 50% of the variability in the promotion of teamwork measure. Additionally, the research reports the statistically significant, but negligible treatment effect of the CFO's experience external to higher education and the size of the institution where he/she is employed on the key regression variables. The findings also indicated that responses on key regression variables were not significantly different based on age, gender, other experience measures, educational level attained, or educational degree field.

This research study takes an important step toward quantifying the linkage between a CFO's behaviors to inspire a shared vision and attitudes about the belief and benefits of teams and their ability to create an environment to foster and promote teamwork. It also includes suggestions for further study.
