Thesis (D.Min.)--Drew University, 2001.
First United Methodist Church in Alexandria has had a presence but not an identity. The church has been in decline for at least ten years. The church's has traditionally tried to resolve its conflicts and form visions through hierarchical means and this linear thinking has not utilized the wealth of understanding and leadership that resides within the laity of the church. The way out of this malaise and into becoming who God calls us to be is to intentionally redefine our calling through a vision, which becomes an identity and to do this using a team-based construct.

When the church works out its calling as a series of individuals all pulling in their own direction the gifts and graces of the laity are not utilized and the primary function of the church of making disciples is not accomplished. A systems approach using teams develops the whole person and the whole church. The vision which is developed under this methodology becomes part of the daily identity of the church and so becomes a “living” church among the people. Such a team-based vision is transformational for the church member and for the community.

Our vision: “Opening Hearts to God's Grace,” has begun transforming our ministries and the lives of church members. As one lay servant leader said, “It feels like we are at the point of boiling.” Another says, “I've been waiting for this for thirty-five years. It finally feels like we are being church.”
