This case study involves the use of art therapy with a male adolescent exhibiting acute behavior problems within an educational setting. Presenting problems identified within the client, included hyperactivity, poor impulse control, and impaired social skills. Over the course of 18 sessions, treatment was directed toward strengthening the client's dubious sense of self by encouraging him to participate in creative artmaking. This was achieved through the use of animal imagery, metaphor, and both expression and identification of feelings.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A qualitative approach was used for the purpose of this study in exploring the therapeutic process, while literature specific, but not limited to, the studies of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, utilization of animal imagery and metaphor, and art therapy's ability to empower sense of self, further contributes to this study. Through art therapy, spontaneous art expression and imagery gave voice to an adolescent encumbered by rigid defenses and little sense of self.
