The review of the literature and the IPS training curriculum that served as the foundation for the instrument suggested a framework composed of two domains: cognitive/affective and action-driven. The two domains were treated separately through a mixed design that included a 24-item inventory and three case studies. For the case studies, the focus is less on the effectiveness of the responses and more on how pro-social the responses are.

Adult inmates and instructors of CB programs were involved in all the stages of developing the instrument. The final version of the instrument was tested with a group of 310 adult inmates in state prisons. The Interpersonal Problem Solving Measurement (IPSM) has demonstrated acceptable construct and discriminative validity, and internal consistence reliability. Principal components and factor analyses reinforced the proposed theoretical framework with four inter-related factors.
