The study investigates the relationship between enrollment status in the RSBHC with a wide range of variables, including (a) knowledge about the RSBHC for students and parents/guardians, (b) parent/guardian attitudes about healthcare for their children, (c) student use and utilization and satisfaction with RSBHC or their healthcare provider, (d) the basis of decision making to use the RSBHC or another healthcare provider and, (e) to determine the differences in background/demographic variables between users and nonusers of the RSBHC.

The study was conducted with a convenience sample of students and their parents/guardians. There was a 33% parent/guardian response rate for a total of 57 enrolled (PE) and 45 in a non-enrolled (PNE) group. The student response rate was 100%, producing 57 enrolled (SE) and 45 in a non-enrolled (SNE) group (for a total of 204 participants).

Data were collected on researcher-created instruments, which were pilot tested and showed good reliability and internal consistency. The instruments and Informed Consent were mailed to parents asking them to participate and to give consent for their children to participate in the study. Parents completed their instruments at home. Students completed their instruments in their classrooms.

The data were analyzed using SPSS-PC, and showed significant results: (a) SE had more accurate knowledge than SNE about the RSBHC; (b) PE had more accurate knowledge than PNE about some aspects of the RSBHC; (c) PE had more positive attitudes about healthcare for their children than PNE; (d) SE had a greater degree of satisfaction with the RSBHC than SNE had with their healthcare provider; (e) of employed students, SE use the RSBHC more than SNE use their health care provider; (f) SE had a higher grade average than SNE and, (g) a few differences existed between enrolled and non-enrolled in their reasons for use their healthcare provider. The groups were homogenous in background and demographic characteristics.

Based on the findings, health promotion activities include strategies for marketing the RSBHC to increase parental knowledge, possibly improve parental attitudes about the RSBHC, and increase the chance of the parental behavior of consent for their children to use the RSBHC.
