The present study sought to determine if art activities could be used to enhance development in the areas of (a) linguistic concept acquisition and (b) schematic drawing of the human figure by prelinguistically hearing impaired students. Portions of an experimental art curriculum which correlated art activities with learning objectives from language, health, social science, and natural science were used by four groups of level one (K-1) hearing impaired children. Each group served as its own control in a two treatment reversal design. The Boehm Test of Basic Concepts was used for concept identification and the measurement of concept acquisition resulting from the treatment. The Goodenough-Harris Drawing Test, Draw-a-Man segment, was used as a measurement of schematic growth of the human figure. A panel of four art specialists was used in a blind evaluation of growth characteristics observed in the sequence of art products resulting from the treatment. The results of the study indicate that subjects showed greatest concept gains when the concepts were taught using the experimental art curriculum. Subjects also showed significant gains on the Goodenough-Harris Draw-a-Man Test during the experimental phase as opposed to no gains during the control phase of the experiments. Blind evaluations by art specialists revealed schematic growth characteristics resulting from the art activities. However, these observable characteristics did not prove to be significantly greater than chance guessing by the art specialists. The results of the study strongly suggest that the linkage of visual art activities to developmental objectives in the areas of (a) linguistic concept acquisition, and (b) schematic drawing of the human figure produces a highly effective tool for teaching those objectives to young students who are prelinguistically and profoundly hearing impaired. Implications for future programming of art activities for young hearing impaired children are discussed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
