520 $a A nonlinear optical polymer with center-anchored chromophores attached to the polyimide backbone has been synthesized. For comparison purposes, a similar polymer, with end-anchored chromophores attached to the same backbone, has also been synthesized. The polyimide backbone was synthesized through an improved procedure that avoids the use of the air-sensitive di-amino monomers.
520 $a A new method for the direct functionalization of hexamolybdate [Mo 6O19][N(C4H9)4]2 with anilines under mild conditions has been discovered, and several organoimido derivatives of [Mo6O19][N(C4H9) 4]2 have been synthesized with high yields. The Sonogoshia palladium coupling reaction of iodine-bearing organoimido compounds with aromatic ethynyl compounds was demonstrated for the first time.
520 $a A modular building-block approach has been developed to synthesize organic/inorganic hybrid materials with hexamolybdate ions. Several dumbbell compounds, in which two hexamolybdate ions were bridged through rigid organic conjugates, have been synthesized. Quantitative cyclic voltammetry studies showed that those hexamolybdate ions communicated well through the organic conjugates.
520 $a Hybrid compounds with hexamolybdate ions and terpyridine ligands have been synthesized, and their coordination with zinc ions has been studied. A zwitterionic compound, in which a hexamolybdate ion and a ruthenium complex were linked through an organic conjugate, has also been synthesized for the first time.
520 $a Two series of conjugated polymers, with covalently attached hexamolybdate pendants, have been synthesized for the first time. Effective fluorence quenching of the hexamolybdate pendants on the photoexcited polymer backbones was observed. The quenching efficiencies of these polymers are correlated to the molybdenum contents in the polymers.
520 $a Three poly(<italic>p</italic>-phenylenevinylene) polymers, with cross-conjugated oxadiozales and ester units, have been synthesized. It was found that these polymers exhibit low photoluminescence quantum efficiencies due to the existence of intrachain charge-transfer transition. Four poly(<italic>o</italic>-phenylenevinylene) polymers have been synthesized for blue light-emitting applications. These polymers showed higher photoluminescence efficiencies and larger energy bandgaps than the unsubstituted poly(<italic>p</italic>-phenylenevinylene)s. Two of them, with short emission wavelengths and high photoluminescence efficiencies in solid state, are suitable for the fabrication of blue light-emitting devices.
