Key world view assumptions concerning the metaphysical aspect of Self by the Ndorobo people in Kenya are explored through componential analysis, narrative and proverb textual analysis, and ethnographic interviews. The aim of the research is to discover significant implications notions of the non-physical Self wield in the overall world view of Ndorobo and apply the theoretical framework of Critical Contextualization to the Ndorobo context (Hiebert 1984, 1994, 1999). Detailed description shows the heart as the center of Ndorobo Self existence by intimate interaction with significant components of the nonphysical Self classed into three important categories organizing life experience into a methodic and serviceable world view, namely the societal, individual, and supernatural categories.

The societal category defines individuality as culturally acceptable inner qualities manifested in socially circumscribed standard of behaviors. Survival of Ndorobo culture is dependent upon internalizing the societal category within the personality, conscience, character, and honesty elements of Self. Volitional and behavioral differences between individuals are explained through the elements of emotion, perception, understanding, desire, and decision operating within the individual category which recognizes motivation and ambition are particular to each individual. The supernatural category explains personal existence and life experience through divine gift of soul, spirit, and breath. Forces of good and evil recognized in the category account for the inconsistent and unpredictable nature of life experience outside control of Self and society.

Ndorobo concept of the immaterial Self is a connection of interacting elements whose prime objective is to shape behavior. The societal category is a guide serving as a directive of behavior; the individual category is a determiner who serves as an agent of behavior; and the supernatural category acts as a principle of behavior by supplying causal forces. In addition, the foundational nature of Self as a universal category is upheld as self notions are found to have significant interaction with other Ndorobo world view assumptions in particular, time, space, causality, classification, relationship, motivation, customary law, ritual, and ethics. Fundamental beliefs contained in the understanding of Ndorobo notions of Self underline the importance and relevancy of contextualizing the Christian message to address these assumptions.
