Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 1998.
A qualitative research study was undertaken with the purpose of gaining a beginning understanding of the occurrence, significance, and management of countertransference in the treatment of sexually abused children. Two groups of psychotherapists--one with and one without a personal history of childhood sexual abuse--participated in multiple exploratory interviews. An analysis of the interviews revealed 33 major themes and 33 sub-themes. Of these, five major themes and 14 sub-themes have never before been noted in the sexual trauma literature. All of the themes were discussed within the framework of research questions that focused on the ways in which countertransference differs between Survivor Therapists (STs) and Non-Survivor Therapists (N-STs), the ways in which countertransference corresponds between STs and N-STs, and the role that personal therapy, supervision, training, and other factors play in mediating countertransference.
