Thesis (M.A.)--Marshall University, 2001.
Osteoporosis is an increasing, yet preventable health disease. Information regarding osteoporosis has previously not been presented to the appropriate audience. The effects of osteoporosis are felt later in life; therefore childhood is the period most ameanable for prevention. In eastern Kentucky, 87 fourth grade students participated in a Milk Consumption Observation (MCO) with 44 students participating in the Osteoporosis Prevention Education series (OPE). The MCO involved registered dietitians monitoring students purchasing and consuming milk during school lunch. The OPE series provided the fourth graders with pertinent information regarding the quiz. The control and educated groups took the same quiz before and after the OPE series to assess knowledge. Results indicate that the fourth grade students receiving education increased milk consumption by 14.3% during school lunch. In conclusion, the OPE series has merit with the select group of fourth grade students in eastern Kentucky and requires further study.
