Thesis (M.Ed.)--The University of Regina (Canada), 2001.
The purpose of this study was to deepen the understanding of the experience of primary teachers in significant conversations with their students. Five primary classroom teachers responded to an invitation to participate that was sent to primary teachers from selected schools in two urban Saskatchewan school boards. These five teachers openly described their conversations with students through personal interviews which were audio taped and transcribed. The resulting data was analyzed and four themes emerged: Significance of Conversations, The Occurrence of Conversations, The Teachers' Role in Conversations, and The Need for Conversations. Recommendations include increasing awareness of the importance of conversations and promoting understanding of teachers' role in conversations. Lingering questions remain regarding the terminology surrounding conversation in classrooms, the experience of students in significant conversations and how this experience differs for different age groups.
