Music educators have long recognized the educational value of making music in small ensembles. This study has been devoted to introducing young students to the joys to be found in such activity. Part of the investigation involved the preparation of a student ensemble book complete with teaching strategies for coaches. In order to expose young students to a wide variety of the world's music, quartet arrangements of various genres, styles, and cultures have selected and transcribed. This material is not intended as a method of string instruction but rather as a supplement to existing method books.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study focused on accomplishing a number of tasks. One task was to familiarize the teachers and students with the development of the string quartet. Another was to identify the role of each instrument within the quartet. Exercises were designed to improve the intonation of the student quartet, using finger pattern etudes and tuning chorales. Other exercises were related to the study of melody and harmony. Some concepts such as “call and response” and harmonic devices such as “fauxbourdon” were emphasized.

The remainder of this study contains string quartet arrangements of music categorized as follows: classical music, religious, political, regional, Ragtime, patriotic, and World music (Asian, Jewish, Latin American, Native American, South African, and Western European). Each selection in a chapter includes appropriate teaching strategies.

Small ensemble performance introduces young musicians to playing “one on a part.” From such experience comes good musicianship. The inclusion of music of various genres, styles and cultures promotes a wider appreciation of the art among school string students.
