Thesis (M.S.)--University of Louisville, 2003.
The effects of high intensity, explosive-type strength training (ST) on the cycling performance of two female, active cyclists was investigated. Subject S ceased all durance training for 3 weeks and participated in the 3-week ST. Subject C continued regular endurance training for the 3 weeks. Tests were conducted pre and post the 3 week training. Wmax, VO2max, lactate threshold, and time to exhaustion (TE), peak power output, anaerobic power, and mean watts, were determined. C had no substantial change in any variable. Subject S improved TE by 9.7%. VO2max decreased by 7.7%. Wmax improved by 13.7%. S increased leg strength by 44.4% in the right leg and 53.8% in left leg in single-legged leg press. Improvements in anaerobic power included w = 13.7%, and watt/kg = 4.8% with a decrease in mean power output of 11%. Results indicate that 3-d/wk high intensity, explosive type strength training program can induce substantial increases in cycling performance specifically by improving fatigue resistance, anaerobic power and capacity, and muscular strength and endurance.Subjects--Topical Terms:
