This study examined energy and nutrient intake, physical activity, and unhealthy weight control behaviors (UWCB) among adolescent non-elite weight-related and power team sports participants and non-sport involved adolescents, and (for females only) examined associations between a range of psychosocial factors and both UWCB and sub-optimal nutrient intake (SNI).
520 $a <italic>Methods</italic>. Data were drawn from Project EAT, a study of 4,746 adolescents from 31 middle and high schools in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota metropolitan area. Analyses were conducted across the three groups by gender. General linear models were used to compare mean physical activity and intake of energy and nutrients overall and for participants with and without UWCB within each sport group. Percentages of youth meeting nutrient recommendations and engaging in dieting and UWCB were compared using χ<super>2</super> tests. Logistic regression models were used to explore factors associated with UWCB and SNI.
520 $a <italic>Results</italic>. Sport-involved youth had higher mean nutrient intakes than non sport-involved peers, but calcium intake was sub-optimal for females. Within gender, weight-related sports females and power team sports males reported the lowest prevalence of UWCB. Power team sports participants reported the lowest prevalence of extreme weight control behaviors. UWCB impacted nutrient intake less for sport-involved adolescents than non sport-involved adolescents. Weight concerns and use of healthy weight control behaviors were associated with UWCB across all three groups. Positive parental attitudes towards physical activity (both sport groups), greater meal frequency (for power team sports) and weekly frequency of breakfast and stronger health concerns (for weight-related sports) were associated with lower use of UWCB. Meal frequency (for power team sports females) and family meals (for weight-related sports females) were associated with lower likelihood of SNI.
520 $a <italic>Conclusions</italic>. Sports-involved adolescents have more optimal nutrient intake, lower prevalence of UWCB, and less impact of UWCB on nutrient intake than non sport-involved peers. However, given the high prevalence of UWCB, they are still in need of interventions aimed at promoting optimal nutrient intake and preventing UWCB. Interventions should address weight concerns, involve parents and coaches, and be based on factors associated with a decreased likelihood of UWCB and SNI unique to each sport type.
