This research is an ethnographic examination of the straight edge movement based upon six years of participant observation and in-depth interviews with members of the group. I first reconceptualize subcultural resistance based upon a discussion of straight edge core values. My study demonstrates how youth groups emerge not just in resistance to dominant adult culture, but in complex relationships with other youth subcultures. I show how current theoretical explanations of resistance are too narrow to encompass the multitude of meanings, targets, and methods of resistance.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Next, I use the straight edge movement to explore the less structured dynamics of movement activity and discuss the additional roles collective identity plays in diffuse movements. The movement illustrates the crucial functions collective identity serves in less structured, lifestyle-based social change and demonstrates that organizational conceptualizations of social movements fail to capture important avenues of cultural protest. I show how a strong collective identity is the foundation of diffuse movements, providing "structure", a basis for commitment, and guidelines for participation.

Continuing with the collective identity theme, I examine an ongoing tension within the straight edge movement between tolerance and militancy, inclusiveness and exclusivity. I discuss the identity battles straight edge adherents wage against one another as they struggle to define the straight edge collective identity. Uncovering the history of the movement's internal struggles will lead to a concluding discussion regarding the consequences of inclusiveness and exclusivity and how straight edge balances the two.

Finally, I describe the two faces of straight edge, one proposing a more progressive vision of manhood, the other reflecting hegemonic masculinity, and compare straight edge to the other men's movements. I conclude that multiple expressions of masculinity emerge within a single men's movement and highlight the problems of reconstructing manhood in a masculine context.
