The seventy-six pre-Tridentine liturgical manuscripts of the Cathedral of Florence form one of the greatest and most magnificent extant collections from a single church. Produced between the tenth and sixteenth centuries, these codices have only recently been made available as a complete set, thus allowing a first-time, comprehensive examination.

520 $a This dissertation is fundamentally a source study. It seeks to identify all surviving liturgical books in use before the Council of Trent (1545--1563) not only at the church known today as Santa Maria del Fiore, but also at the pre-fourteenth-century Cathedral of Santa Reparata. At the core of this investigation is a systematic analysis of the manuscripts, but the ultimate goal is to trace the evolution of the liturgy at the Florentine ecclesia maior. Several important phases of this development are taken into consideration, and the historical, social, and cultural forces motivating such changes are discussed. Special attention is given to the liturgies and chants for saints of particular local significance (e.g. St. Zenobius, St. Reparata, St. Eugene, St. Antoninus). Moreover, the impact of the Council of Trent on Florentine liturgical practice is carefully examined, and found to have had no substantive influence.
520 $a The methodology employed in this study is widely interdisciplinary. Recognizing the complex and multifaceted nature of these books, each manuscript is examined as a codicological, liturgical, artistic, and musical product. The inquiry is often aided by archival material, much of which is newly edited. This broad approach to the study of music and liturgy offers a more global understanding of Florence as religious, artistic, and cultural center.
