Electrical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of Pyrograf™ III vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) composites were studied. The volume electrical properties of VGCF organic resin matrix composites exhibited a percolation behavior. Volume electrical resistivity plateaus existing on the plots for unpolished samples and SEM studies confirmed the existence of a resin rich layer on the top and bottom press-molded sample surfaces. The electric field insertion losses (ILe) and magnetic field insertion losses (ILm) of VGCF composites generally increased with an increase of fiber loading or sample thickness. The composites prepared using PR-19-HT fibers exhibited the best electric and magnetic field shielding properties as compared to those composites prepared using PR-19-PS, PR-24-PS and oxidized PR-24-PS fibers. The composites prepared using a vinyl ester matrix exhibited higher ILe and ILm values than those using epoxy, dicylopentadiene (DCPD) and clay + epoxy matrix systems.Subjects--Topical Terms:
