Thesis (M.A.)--Trent University (Canada), 2003.
In this study, the extent to which social housing projects for Aboriginal households in Canadian cities facilitate and reflect Aboriginal culture is examined. Notwithstanding the conceptual denial of a place for Aboriginal cultures in urban centres by mainstream society, the Aboriginal presence there is distinguishable culturally, as it is socioeconomically. The development of the Urban Native Housing Program out of the efforts of Friendship Centres and other urban-based Aboriginal organizations demonstrates the acknowledgement and respect of the aforementioned attributes by Aboriginal urban communities. Survey responses of UNH Program corporations across the country are used to exemplify the various ways in which this recognition manifests today. Finally, the promotion and facilitation of Aboriginal culture at an apartment complex for Aboriginal elderly in Toronto is explored using data collected in interviews and surveys with staff and tenants. In the process of addressing the specifics of the urban cultural experiences of their tenants, Aboriginal housing corporations have effectively created places within Canadian cities which nurture, sustain and promote Aboriginal cultures.
