This study examined the role of the arts in the culture of the Bush Negroes of Suriname, also known as Maroons. It investigated the capacity of the arts to shape formal and informal institutional practices, process social meaning, and contribute to cultural cohesion and change. 520 $a This site-based qualitative research collected data through interviews, observations, and examination of documents and artifacts of the Surinamese Maroons. Participants were Maroons in the interior villages and urban communities of Suriname, Maroons in the Netherlands, and people involved in the arts and culture of the Surinamese Maroons. The approach incorporated grounded theory, ethnographic participant and nonparticipant observation. The data were organized into thematic units and grouped according to site, function, and arts tradition of the informants.
520 $a Analysis of the data showed that the social framework, through which traditional Maroon artistic culture was expressed, has been disrupted, and the traditional approach to art and society has almost disappeared in the Maroon culture. Community structures that reflect the social order are critical for the Maroon society to exist, and constant communal processes of reworking artistic arrangements are shown to contribute to cultural cohesion. Further, through the arts, these structures can be defined and redefined as they are essential for the social order to continue.
520 $a Findings of this study emphasized the need to become aware of the importance of maintaining intact social conditions in which art can be expressed. Informal artistic expressions and ways of meaning-making among cultures such as the Maroons highlight the integrated ways in which the arts, culture, and education can inform broader educational traditions and promote cultural pluralism in an increasingly diverse world.
