Thesis (M.L.A.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2003.
The course of adolescent development is shaped by a variety of factors, including the physical environments in which youth develop. Recommendations for planning and design are based upon a review of literature in the ecology of adolescent development and leisure studies. Suggestions for improved planning and design of open space address the provision of leisure opportunity for youth, and measures to increase the ability of youth to access desired destinations. Further suggestions address the importance youth place upon social contact with their peers, and the importance of strong social networks for youth and their families. Final recommendations for research and the practice of landscape architecture and planning highlight the need to better understand and respond to the needs of youth and society as a whole.
