Thesis (Ed.D.)--Spalding University, 1996.
The exponential growth of health care technology, societal change, reformation of health care delivery, the issues of right to health care and individual responsibility for health combine to create an acute care nursing practice environment that is dynamic and turbulent. Tensions within this practice context challenge the abilities of all health care providers to engage in ethical practice.

The focus of this study was the design and testing of a bioethics education approach to sensitize staff nurses to the ethical dimension of patient care. Study participants ("n"-11) identified bioethical concerns and issues in their everyday nursing practice. Three bioethics case studies were investigator developed based upon participant identified ethical concerns. A series of three bioethics case study discussions was conducted by the investigator using an adaptation of Velasquez' model for ethical dilemma analysis.

The effect of structured bioethics case study discussion was evaluated by comparison of participants' pre and post intervention scores on Rest's Defining Issues Test (DIT) and Ketefian's Judgements about Nursing Decisions (JAND) and by post intervention interview responses. Quantitative data showed limited support for the effectiveness of the intervention. Qualitative data showed strong support for effectiveness of the intervention.
