This dissertation is concerned with filmmaker Souleymane Cisse's works, as texts which engage both modernist discourse and postcolonial criticism. It examines Cisse's cinema in relation to the discourses on identity, comparative studies of film and literature, postcolonialism and postmodernism, particularly via the concepts of simulacrum and improvisation, nostalgia and utopia, as these are relevant to the overall cinematic practices of Francophone West Africa. It draws on and expand current academic works in post-structuralist and postcolonial theory, to examine how issues of under-development and nationhood, elite hegemonies and the rhetoric of ambivalence, alienation and narration circulate in Cisse's cinema. Thus, it focuses on the notions of marginal cultural spaces and the cinema of postcoloniality in non-European spaces, as these have been historically transformed by contact with European political, cultural and economic systems.

520 $a Historically, after World-War II, filmmakers in Francophone Africa followed in the footsteps of their literary predecessors of the Negritude movement. As postcolonial subjects, they participated in the same movement of social and political criticism pertaining to issues of shifting identities in the region. Subsequently, they engaged in the discursive process of redefining their independent nation-states which were now hybridized cultural, economic and political spaces. Since 1970, Cisse's films have been part of this intellectual movement of the region. Thus, this analysis explores the use of cinema, as a medium of criticism, by cultural producers who are members of an elite group involved in such a movement.
520 $a The postcolonial subject is a historical subject caught in the division between the world of ideas and the world of experience, and is marked by the desire for self-expression and the adequate or inadequate reflection of lived experiences. Hence, the concept of postcolonialism and its discourse appropriate and challenge previous modernist homogeneous conceptions of the subject. However, the problematic implications of the concept and its discourse have yet to be interrogated and defined.
